Summary
Head and shoulders silhouette of Captain Henry Becher, mounted in a wooden (walnut) frame with some gilt decoration. Handwritten note on the back: 'Captain Henry Becher. Born 1786 (in pencil crossed out '86' and 65 written). Died June 19th 1856 (56 crossed out in pencil and 36 written underneath. Aged 70 years.' Cutting from newspaper of 'black hole monument to go' attached to the clips on the back board.
Provenance
Given by Edward Beaumont in 1998 by variation of the will of his uncle, whose wife Mary Veronica (d.1997) was the last of the Bechers of Southwell.
Marks and inscriptions
Back of picture: Captain Henry Becher. Born 1786. Died June 19th 1856. Aged 70 years. the last two digits of 1786 are crossed out in pencil, 65 written alongside. Underneath, in pencil and in a different hand, is written Son of Henry Tarquin Becher. The last two digits of 1856 are crossed out in pencil with 36b written alongside. Back of picture - newspaper clipping.: 'Black Hole' monument is to go.
