Summary
This large cotton bedspread is block printed with a red and green paisley pattern. This design has its origins in ancient Aryan culture, where the pattern is called 'boteh', which means bush, shrub or cluster of leaves in Persian. This throw was most likely made in India. It was made using a block printing technique. with each colour printed separately on top of each other, creating an interwoven display of green, red and black. Some misprints are visible on the throw, suggesting it was handmade.
Provenance
Bequeathed to the National Trust by Khadambi Asalache upon his death in 2006; acquired fully in November 2010.
