Summary
Exercise/note book containing a handwritten essay on 24 pages copied out by Hannah Greg. It is addressed to the Duodecimo Society on the first page, followed by an essay by A. Hodgson, dated 26th June 1812 titled "The Advantages which result from combining commercial and literary pursuits". An extract from Dugald Stewart's work (1753-1824) "Elements of the Philosophy of the Human Mind" written in 1792 is copied as a preface to the essay. A Hodgson's essay discusses the conflict between the needs for success as a merchant and the cultivation of good taste and a cultural awareness which was a lifelong concern of Hannah Greg in the raising of her children and into their adult lives.
