Summary
A 10hp beam engine, made of cast iron with a replacement bed plate in steel, date of manufacture uncertain. It is comprised of a steam piston and cylinder complete with steam inlet chest and operating gear, condensing cylinder with water quench supply and ejector pump for removing condensate/water mix, cast-iron beam on cast-iron support frame, and a crank and flywheel. Purchased in 1992 from Challinor Timber Mills, Macclesfield, where it had been since the 1840’s. It was purchased by Quarry Bank in 1992 and underwent considerable restoration. In 1998 it was installed on the original engine bed of the 1836 Boulton & Watt 1836 20hp beam engine.
