Summary
A Universal Yarn Assorting Balance no. 1 made by John Nesbitt and Co. Ltd. an instrument for estimating the counts of yarn. The yarn is attached by a hook to one end of the balance, a small weight being attached to the other end and the number of threads that balance the beam give the count. It includes three templates for cutting the length of yarn, also in the box is a razor blade which can be attached to the balance and was probably used to cut the yarn to size. One of the hinges on the box is broken.
