Summary
One of a set of thirty two mounted photographs showing aspects of Venice and Florence, this one shows the winged lion of St Mark, Venice, with a book between his front paws mounted on a granite column, one of a pair set beside the lagoon by the Doge's palace. Written in pencil beneath the photograph is the text "Work of the 15th century with modern wings. During the Republican rule of the French, the words of the Gospel were effaced from the book which he holds & "Doits (sic) de l'Homme et du citoyen" (1789) substituted. Was removed to Paris but restored in 1815". The French saying of 1789 is the declaration of the rights of man and of the citizen at the time of the Revolution.
