Full description
A high quality flintlock hunting rifle by Franz Ulrich, Bern, c1820. Ulrich is recorded in both Bern and Stuttgart during the period 1771 to 1845. The flintlock mechanism is by Henry Piper, Guildford (recorded 1823-45). Octagonal iron barrel, slightly swamped at the muzzle. Blade foresight and adjustable 2-leaf rear sight. The breech with a platinum touch hole; the top flat signed F.ULRICH in BERNE and stamped with makers mark. Retained to the stock by 3 barrel slides. Wooden ramrod (damaged). Length: 69.5cm. Calibre: 18mm – rifled with 8 grooves. Walnut full stock with chequered wrist and forestock, the butt formed with a cheek-rest on the left side and a patch-box with sliding cover on the right side. Engraved brass furniture comprising; buttplate, 2 small sideplates, trigger guard with pineapple finial and formed with a scroll shaped finger rest, 2 ramrod pipes. Horn forend cap (damaged). The butt has a loop for a sling. Flintlock side-lock, the flat plate engraved overall with foliate designs and signed beneath the pan, PIPER. Flat cock with sliding bolt safety; waterproof pan; the frizzen with anti-friction roller. The lock is retained to the stock by 2 sidenails. Overall length: 108.6cm

Marked in Lady Iveagh’s 1966 Inventory, p 45. Accepted by the Treasury in lieu of Estate Duty on the death of the 5th and the 6th Earl in 1984.
