Summary
[Saved] Silver hunting horn inscribed 'Ripley and Knaphill Harriers', and dated 1883. Engraved with Lord Onslow's monogram. William, 4th Earl of Onslow (1853-1911) was Master of of the Ripley and Knaphill Harriers. Made by musical instrument makers Kohler and Son and bearing the mark of Augustus Kohler (d 1890). Founded in the late eighteenth-century by German John Kohler, the Kohler family made flutes and brass instruments including trumpets and French horns. They gradually specialised in the making of coaching and hunting horns. Kohler and Son were awarded prizes at the Great Exhibition of 1851 and the International Exhibition of 1862.
