Full description
An English carpet of Savonnerie appearance made for and exhibited at the Exhibition of 1851. Bears the monogram of Victoria and Albert on opposite corners and the date '1851' on the other sides. Most likely made at Wilton. From the 1999 Report: "The carpet does not appear in the 1833 or 1863 inventories for the house In both of these, the Great Hall (Called the Front Hall or Billiard Room in 1863) is listed as having a Turkey carpet. In the 1872 Inventory, this has been replaced by an Axminster carpet and an "Exhibition pattern tapestry carpet," presumably this present one.
Provenance
Part of the Windham Collection. The hall and contents were bequeathed to the National Trust in 1969 by Robert Wyndham Ketton-Cremer (1906-1969)
