Summary
A musical box, c.1870's. A square walnut box with bone inlay stringing and a plain shield. Metal catch, slider and stop. Four bun feet. The round brass disc has metal tags on it, which in turn pluck the steel comb giving the desired notes. The positions of the tags give the melody. Labelled on inside of lid 'Polyphon' and a design of four putti playing instruments. The mechanism is inscribed 'Polyphon, Tempo Regulator Mechanism'. Some teeth are broken. Envelope containing six discs: 'Stephanie Gavotte', 'Home Sweet Home', 'Cake Walk', 'When Other Lips', Bailsirenen', 'The Old Kentucky Home Good Night'. Manufactured by Polyphon Musikwerk Liepzig, Germany, c.1890-1914.
Provenance
Part of the Windham Collection. The hall and contents were bequeathed to the National Trust in 1969 by Robert Wyndham Ketton-Cremer (1906-1969).
