Summary
A beech adjustable armchair, circa 1890, by John Carter, London The back, seat, foot rest and arms upholstered and fully adjustable to reclining and sitting positions. The arms are hinged to allow easy access to the seat, which can be highered or lowered. With turned arm supports and legs and raised on brass castors. Floral upholstery of beige and pink flowers on green ground. John Carter is listed on an advertising poster dated 1894 as trading from 6a Cavendish Street, London and specializing in the manufacture of 'Literary Machines and invalid comforts. For holding a book or writing desk in any position over an easy chair, bed or sofa, obviating fatigue and stooping. Invaluable to invalids or students'
