Copper line engraving, Hickling Priory, Norfolk (after Marcus Armstrong) by James Robert Thompson (1798- 1843). To John Micklethwait Esq, Lord and Patron of Hickling. Published as the Act Directs, August 18, 1781 by M. Booth, Norwich. Del Marcus Armstrong, sc Thompson, Norwich. Taken from book.B3.S28. The priory was founded in 1185 by Theobald, grandson of Peter de Valognes who arrived with William the Conqueror. By 1291 the Priory had possession of thirty two Norfolk parishes and held an annual three-day fair. The plague killed all but two of its brethren and the priory never fully recovered.The Priory was surrendered to the crown on June 4, 1534 and fell into disrepair.
