Summary
A bookcase, from a pair, circa 1814, painted white and parcel-gilt, with faux-marble painted tops above numerous shelves. These bookcases were introduced by the architect Humphry Repton (1752-1818) who supervised decoration works at Ham and painted the Saloon white and gold. They were used by Sir Harry Fetherstonhaugh (1754-1846) for his rare books. Part of his collection of porcelain vases was also displayed on top, as can later be seen on the interiors photographs published by Country Life in 1910.
Provenance
Intended for the Saloon at Uppark, fitted when the room was painted in white and gold circa 1814.
