Caption
Cut from feminine pale blue chiffon, this couture dress is elaborately embroidered with sparkling sequins, bluebell-shaped beads and crystals. It is part of a large collection of bespoke and ready-to-wear clothing worn by Jean Appleyard, wife of John Appleyard, chairman of the motor distribution company Appleyards, and one time chair of Jaguar. The dress was a bespoke design for a special occasion. It was made in the late 1950s or early 1960s when shorter lengths were becoming more acceptable for formal evening attire.
