Summary
Stay binder - Fine white even-weave cotton, made from four main pieces interlined with cotton batting. The stays are quilted in an undulating linear pattern on the backs, and following a central 'V' on the front. Central zone is quilted in a diamond pattern, the 'V' emphasised by four lines of stitching either side of the central panel, alternating with a zig zag pattern. Stitching is done on a lock-stitch and a chain stitch sewing machine. Seams are bound with cotton tape. A 28mm slot in left side seam takes waist tape. Pair of 35-18mm wide tapered waist tapes attached 45mm from hem, to wrap around the body and fasten with metal hook and eyelets. There are three eyelets stitched onto the right-hand tape, making the waistband adjustable. This is probably an example of a ready-made garment. Two shoulder straps attached to upper edge with hand-stitching. Odd buttons (to fasten stays to plich/drawers) hand-stitched to lower edge at side seams. One is a linen covered button, the other bone.
