Summary
Evening coat - Evening dress and matching short coat, late 1930s black silk woven with broad velvet stripe. Coat made in three pieces plus two pieces for collar and sleeves cut in two pieces. The coat is shaped to the waist with a series of darts forming a deep peplum. The collar is turned down and extends to the waist. Coat fastens with a single black metal button at centre front, button hole worked by hand. The fabric is tucked at centre front sides and centre back to conceal the silk stripe, giving the appearance of a solid velvet band. The coat has square padded shoulders and three-quarter length sleeves finished with turn back velvet cuffs. Lined to waist with black rayon satin. Label; Sewn into centre back neck 'G.Worth, 50 Grosvenor Street' possibly made by the house of Worth although suspected by donor to be a fake.
