Summary
Evening dress and matching short coat, late 1930s black silk woven with broad velvet stripe. Dress sleeveless, skirt cut in six pieces shaped into waistband at centre front with a series of darts; two darts over the hips at back. The skirt is shaped to fit smoothly over the hips flaring out towards the hem. Bodice also cut in six pieces, neckline almost sweetheart line, emphasised by deep collar of velvet. Broad velvet straps form small cape sleeves and extend to low back entirely of velvet. A band of velvet forms a high pointed waistline at centre front. The waistband extends into a false sash and draped bow at centre back forming a bustle and finished with a large silk velvet bow. This has been unpicked and seperated from dress. Dress fastens at centre back with 'ECLAIR' zip. Label; stitched into front waist of dress and centre back of coat 'G.Worth, 50 Grosvenor Street' possibly made by the house of Worth, although suspected by the donor to be a fake.
