Summary
Afternoon or wedding dress of grey silk taffetta, princess line, front opening with triple bows of silk buttons down front (alternate central buttons functional); white silk piping to high neck and watch pocket at left waist. Pleating to cuffs, right pocket and lower front skirt. Trained skirt with tie back and ruched trimming, lined with glazed wool twill. Made by J.Johns of Green Lane, Redruth, Cornwall. 1879.
Provenance
Donor - Blaney, (Miss). Probably worn by donor's great grandmother, Harriet Ellen Toy of Cornwall, who married Stephen Spargo Whitburn in Chile 1873-1874. Marriage said by donor to have taken place in 1873-1874. Research of records shows that marriage was in Chile in 1879. This fits better with the style and construction of the gown.
