Caption
Detail from a baby’s three-tier silk christening cape from Killerton, trimmed with silk broderie with appliqué flowers and dating to around 1907. The Church insisted that christening gowns were made of white fabric to symbolise purity and innocence. Because they were handed down through families, many still survive. Capes similar to this one were worn over the christening gown to help keep the baby warm.
