Summary
Ball dress - Three piece dress; bodice, skirt, neckpiece. Heavy pink corded silk. Bodice; Close fitting, heavily boned, with low round neck, pointed waist back and front. Front fastening (each side alternating hooks and eyes). Needlerun trimmed net draped around neck and front opening forming deep flounced basque. Pairs of pink satin ribbon bows trimming front and back neckline, with larger bow to back waist. Lined with glazed cotton twill with seventeen bones. Sleeves full and puffed at upper arm, tight elbow band , then deep falling cuff, entirely overlaid with needlerun net; lined fine pink ribbed silk. Neckpiece of ruffled machine lace on pink satin ribbon (15 3/4 in long and 1 3/4 in wide), trimmed with four satin ribbon bows, fastening hooks ansd eyes. Skirt; slightly trained ,six widths fabric, box pleated on at centre back, with triangular panels inset at back to give flared line. Hooks and eyes fastening back opening. Hem padded, with fine pink ribbed silk pinked band inside; lined with fine pink ribbed silk; back pleats interlined. Worn by Mrs Charles Arthur Philips of Montacute at the ball given there on the occasion of the visit of the Shah of Persia. Given by Mrs Philips to Mrs H.Aldridge Abbott (wife of the Prebendary of Lanhydrock) thence to her daughter-in-law the donor. N.B - Motacute has no record of such a ball! in village?)
