Summary
Dress - Blue gingham, bodice with centre front opening with five horn buttons; front yokes, front panels slightly pleated at centre; back shaped panels, gathered towards centre waist; wide pelerine-style collar with ruffled edge; 'Victoria' sleeve with two ruched and piped bands to upper arm, very full to elbow then tight to forearm, with needlerun cuffs; all decorative bodice seams piped. Skirt finely gauged onto flat waistband, front opening continuing as slit for 12 in, developing into pleat; pocket slit to right side. Original length neck to hem 50 3/4 in but hem turned up by 5 3/8 in for fancy dress wear (original hem still extant) Bodice lined in unbleached cotton. 1839 (circa)
Provenance
made by Henrietta (nee Ness) wife of Ralpg Green, of the Abbey House, Old Malton, Yorks, as a day dress for the trousseau of her daughter Margaret (b.1819) who married, on 29th May 1839, Richard Sorby (gentleman) of Rotherwood, Rotherham, Yorkshire. Donor and wife are both Green/Ness decendants donor is great grandson of Margaret Green. Donor's mother-in-law had turned up dress for young party.
