Summary
Mantle - Black velvet, trimmed with braid and lined silk / cotton sateen. Semi-fitted long d-b jacket with shawl collar, straight sleeves, flared skirts with vents to side and centre back. Triple frog fastening. Trimmed, with broad band plaited ribbon braid and double cord couched in sawtooth and scroll pattern, to collar, cuffs and hem. Long seams machine sewn (lock stitched) Inside pocket, front left, edged with mushroom pleating flanked by bows. Labelled 'Peter Robinson Ltd, Oxford Street, W'. 1860 (circa)
Provenance
said to have belonged to donor's great-great-grandmother, Mrs.Charles Nicholson of Staniwells, Stowton-by-Scawby, Lincolnshire, widow who lived alone on isolated farm.
