Summary
Afternoon dress - Ivory silk woven with narrow blue stripes, trimmed quill pleated royal blue satin ribbon. Bodice with round neck bound with mid-blue bias cut silk and edged with lace; front opening with buttons covered in royal blue silk; two pairs darts, lightly boned, from bust to centre waist; piped shoulder seams; trimmed from back collar to front V-shape with applied bands. Box pleated net, quill-pleated royal blue satin ribbon and royal blue fringe finishing in a bow at the centre front. Sleeves close fitting to upper arm with gathered oval flounce to elbow, trimmed bands of quilled royal blue ribbon . Skirt trimmed with wider quilled royal blue ribbon to give effect of pair of hanging points; trained back looped (with one vertical and two pairs horizontal modern tapes) to pouf shape; braided hem with gathered flounce, trimmed quilted blue ribbon. Bodice and upper sleeves lined with fine linen ; skirt lined with coarse muslin with book muslin at hem. Probably altered from slightly earlier dress and the blue ribbon added; back skirt pieced and seams resewn; skirt reset at waistband lower sleeves added , bodice is late 1860's shape. Inner tapes and press stud (front opening to skirt) are modern replacement of original tapes by N.B. Nancy Bradfield's reference; D393 One large and one small bow seperate. 1873 - 1874 (circa)
