Summary
Coat; Wedding pelisse in cream silk satin trimmed with chenille and net insertion. High collar, high waistline with ribbon belt attached centre back. Sleeves puffed at shoulder with wool gauze insertion and ruched at intervals along the outside edge, parallel to sleeve cuff. Front edges embroidered with chenille thread around net insertions, the hem decorated with chenille hanging ball fringe. Silk buttons with loop decoration around the circumference down the centre front do not fasten. Two similar buttons at centre back high waistline, holding belt in position. The pelisse is unlined. The net was manufactured at Nottingham in 1810 and is a machine madepoint net with looped structure. (N.B). 1814 (circa)
Provenance
this pelisse was worn by Mrs Mary Anthony (nee Dunham) who married John Anthony in 1814. She was born in 1794, died in 1885 and had three daughters, two of them being twins, none of whom married. Given to N.B. by Mrs Betty Birks, Mary Anthony was her great great aunt.
