Summary
Umbrella; Carriage parasol - Folding carriage parasol. Black painted metal frame, white metal (nickle plated) hinge cover, ivory / bone handle carved to resemble bamboo, pear shaped knob. Fixed bone / ivory ring at ferrule from which hangs a white silk tassel. Stick of white painted wood. Purple satin cotton cover, cream silk lining, both pinked at their edges and lock stitched , over which is stitched a white cotton tatted cover. Flat conical. Note; Lock stitch dates it to early 1860s. Lace covers became fashionable after 1858. In 1866 there was a pattern for one in the lace tatting book. Women's magazines printed designs too.
