Summary
Evening dress skirt - Fine cream / white silk gauze, soie de mousselaine woven in bright yellow silk in floral pattern at hem and bodice back, and leaf pattern on sleeves, bodice front and skirt. Width of silk; 32 1/4 in. Distance between leaf designs 3 1/4 in. This leaf design is very similar to that on p.119 of N.Bradfield's 'Costume in Detail', but the distance is 6 in Skirt is seperate, also without the original silk lining and is made of two full width panels front and back of 32 1/4 in with a panel at either side 9 in wide at hem tapering to the gathered silk waistband. Both waistband and hem are encased in narrow cream silk. The skirt is flat at the front and closely gathered for 6 in centre back, there being a centre back opening and two ties, one original linen, the other a later ribbon replacement. This dress would have been worn with a cream silk underdress see P.119 Nancy Bradfields 'Costume in Detail' Dating; After 1810 'because no train, padded hem would be usual after 1822. 1800 - 1830 gauze popular over silk. 1810 - 1822 (circa)
