Summary
Day dress skirt - Outdoor day dress in harmonising browns (i.e. the dress 'en camieu'). Medium brown moire silk with darker brown silk satin ruched trimming and cream coloured lace. Skirt front of which cut flat and boldly trimmed to side seam. Two back widths gathered to side seam to give fullness for the bustle. Knife pleated flounce at hem. Two tie backs. Skirt unlined except for part section in centre back. Deep pocket towards back on right hand side. 1873 (circa)
Provenance
dress belonged to Caroline Ellen Collins of Bodmin, daughter of a solicitor and sometime Major and worn by her as a 'going away' dress when she married the Rev John Shaw in 1873 in Bodmin. The Rev Shaw was rector of Callington with South Hill for many years.
