Summary
Day dress bodice - Outdoor day dress in harmonising browns (i.e. the dress 'en camieu'). Medium brown moire silk with darker brown silk satin ruched trimming and cream coloured lace. Jacket bodice with high neck, standing collar, piped Valenciennes lace. Buttons to 3 in below waist, long pointed front basques, the two back basques cut in long tabs to project over bustle. Lower jacket edge piped in satin and weighted front and back. 'Coat' sleeves, with deep trimmed cuffs of satin and needlerun and bobbin lace. Bodice lined in white cotton. 1873 (circa)
Provenance
dress belonged to Caroline Ellen Collins of Bodmin, daughter of a solicitor and sometime Major and worn by her as a 'going away' dress when she married the Rev John Shaw in 1873 in Bodmin. The Rev Shaw was rector of Callington with South Hill for many years.
