Summary
Marble, Sir John Courtenay Throckmorton, 5th Bt (1754-1819), Cristoforo Prosperi 1800-1816) after Christopher Hewetson (Thomastown c. 1736 - Rome 1798), inscribed 'Christophorus Hewetson Modellavit Christophorus Prosperi Sculpsit Rome 1800'. A white marble portrait bust of a man, unclothed, on turned marble socle on veined black and pale yellow marble pedestal. The bust is listed in the 1798 Inventory of the contents of Hewetson's Studio, one of the fourteen marble busts found in the sculptor's studio after his death. It is number two in the inventory of modern marble busts and described as: 'Syr John Throgmostron' Altro busto rappresentante il ritratto di Syr John Throgmostron ridotto al punto, che delle sei parti ne sono state fatte quatro, e mezza. The entry states that it was unfinished, with four-and-a-half parts completed out of six. Prosperio completed several unfinished busts by Hewetson, as shown in this case by the inscription. See Ana María Suárez Huerta, 'Will and Inventory of Christopher Hewetson (C1737–1798): Introduction', The British Art Journal, vol. 15, no. 2, 2014, pp. 3–17.
