Summary
An oak four-fold folding screen, English, mid- to late 19th century. Each panel broken-arched and lined with needlework of summer blooms and leaves against a black ground. The needlework reputedly stitched by Elizabeth Acton (d. 1850), wife of Sir Robert Throckmorton, 8th Bt. (1800-62). Elizabeth's mother, Lady Acton, wrote to her daughter saying that the black background would 'ruin her eyes' as she stitched.
Provenance
Purchased by National Trust in 1992 through private treaty sale with NHMF aid.
