Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on ivory, Thomas Peter Giffard (1735-1776) by George Chinnery (London 1774 – Macau 1852). Oval. Head and shoulders portrait of a young man, turned to the left, gazing at the spectator, wearing a blue coat with white cravat and powdered hair. (crack at base). Thomas Peter Giffard (the 22nd) was the son of Peter Giffard of Chillington, Staffordshire, whom he succeeded in 1746, and his third wife, Helena Roberts. [Peter Giffard had earlier married Barbara, daughter of Sir Robert Throckmorton, 3rd Bt. (1662–1720)]. He married: (1) the Hon. Barbara Petre (d.1762), daughter of [?] Robert James, 8th Baron Petre (1713–1742), and Anna Maria Barbara Petre, daughter and heir of the 3rd Earl of Derwentwater; (2) Barbara Throckmorton (d.1764), daughter of Sir Robert Throckmorton, 4th Bt. (1702–1791), and Lady Theresa Herbert; and (3) Frances [no dates given under Camoys or Giffard], daughter of Thomas Stonor of Stonor (1710–1772). The daughter of his first marriage, Maria Catherine (1762–1821) married, in 1782, Sir John Throckmorton, 5th Bt. (1753–1819); and the daughter of his third marriage, Frances, married, in 1798, William Throckmorton (1762–1819), youngest brother of the 5th baronet, and grandson of Sir Robert Throckmorton, 4th Bt. A full-length portrait of Giffard’s son Thomas by Batoni, dated 1784, is at Chillington. According to Ford & Ingamells, Dictionary of British and Irish Travellers in Italy, 1701–1800, Giffard travelled in Italy with the Abbé Hook (possibly Luke Joseph Hooke, 1716–1796), and they were met several times by Sir William Farington, in Florence on 27 March 1765, Rome on 3 April, Naples on 24 April, and Rome again on 8 May.
