Summary
Navel uniform waistcoat - Either a Royal Navy or theatrical waistcoat made from pastel yellow napped wool twill with a back of cream cotton tabby. It is lined with cream cotton tabby. There is a stepped stand collar 80 mm (3.125 in). it is single breasted, square cut and sleeveless. There are 2 welted pockets and it is fastened across the centre back with 2 pairs of tapes. The borders are stitched down the leading edges and top of the pockets. There are various buttons 8 (1 missing), 1-4 small gilt, fouled anchor surmounted by crown, alpha back, back mark 'C J Jennens, London' and 3 feathers (this pattern nearly corresponds to those worn by captains, commanders and lieutenants 1812-1825, but Prince of Wales feather not used until 1860 on back of Jennen's buttons), 5-6 small gilt buttons fouled anchor surmounted by a lion rampant guardant holding a crown, alpha back, no back mark (this pattern nearly corresponds to those worn by captains, commanders and lieutenants 1795 - 1812).
