Summary
A woman's bonnet, c. 1840. The bonnet is made in burgundy wool and silk, with a soft crown gathered at the back of the neck with a crown that slants in a straight line to the brim edge. The sides curve down to points under the chin and the back is decorated with a bavolet. The satin brim is ruched onto four rows of wire with bands of cloth over gathering stitches. The bonnet is lined with cream silk with a frill of silk tulle edged with blonde lace on a silk-covered straw plait frame inside the brim. There is matching red feather decoration over the crown and along the sides of the bonnet, with wide maroon silk ribbons hanging from the points and narrow cream ribbon ties (Mackenzie, 2004).
Provenance
Given to National Trust with Snowshill Manor in 1951 by Charles Paget Wade
