Summary
Livery coat made from red napped wool and lined with red wool twill with a cream cotton centre back panel and sleeves. It is trimmed with 20mm thick white coarse lace with a strip of black and white braid on either side. It is stitched all round the collar and down the leading edges, along the hem, down both seams of sleeves on cuffs, pocket flaps, down centre back and side pieces, down back vent and zigzagged across back and above waist seam. Braid only down both back pleats. Fastens hooks and eyes. Buttons - silver? on brass, domed. Front of coat is pieced and the back is let out, may have been remade, sleeves appear to be different fabric to body of coat. Mark in left sleeve 'Sergt. Simpson 161/2' Possibly German or Austrian. Could have been worn by British Mercenary. (male) Wade Catalogue number 39 "Livery Coat of red cloth braided with black and white, large cuffs, very high collar.
