Summary
Dressing gown; Banyan - Made from red, burgundy, cream roller printed cotton in a design of trailing flowers and leaves. It is part self-lined and part lined with unbleached cotton on the skirts, sleeves and pocket. It fastens with 8 deaths head buttons with a basket weave centre. There is a handwritten postcard 'This cotton cofee coat belonged to SAMUEL PLIMSOLL born 1824 Liberal M P for Derby Known by securing Government insistence on the loading mark on ships - the PLIMSOLL line -'. There is a newspaper cutting and letter from Charles Wade in the pocket; 'This Cotton coat belonged to SAMUEL PLIMSOLL. B. 1824. Liberal MP for Derby. Known by securing government insistence on the loading mark on the side of ships. He was tireless in fighting the Sailor's cause. Obtained from Mr Charles Raven - who is a descendant. 1933.' (male)
