Summary
Badge - Chinese military rank Mandarin square for military official of the 2nd Rank. It is made from brown silk gauze embroidered in silk thread in shades of blue, cream and brown with couched metal thread. There is couched stitch over threads of gauze, satin stitch, seed stitch and brick stitch. The embroidery depicts the Ch'i-lin (lion - see Chung 'Chinese Embroidery' p.112). He is standing on a wave and rock border surrounded by a tree in flower and clouds. There is a thunder line border. It is trimmed with an edging of brown satin roughly embroidered in tent stitch and cross stitch (a later European addition). More likely for ceremonial rather than military use. (male)
