Summary
Wrapper; Shaykh's abayah - A shaykh's abayah (wrapper) from the Middle East made from 2 pieces of handwoven handspun heavy fabric. The lower piece was plain weft faced weave and the top weft patterned, possibly lampas. Some areas include additional silver weft and diamond patterns. It is woven en disposition with tassel motifs between diamond patterns. There is more patterning on the back. There is a cotton warp and wool weft. The lower piece is all black and the top piece had a black ground with yellow areas decorated with red, black and turquoise diamonds. The shoulder seam is overstitched in yellow and red. There are silver pompoms on each tie. There is a cord binding round the neck and down the centre front hanging free to form a tie with silver weights. (male)
