Summary
Dress; Spencer - Woman's spencer (dress) dating from c1820. Fabric - Soft black silk twill (foulard) now faded to dark brown. Lining - Bodice lined with black/yellow shot silk - sleeves lined with fawn glazed cotton. Cuffs stiffened with white leno. Collar also interlined. Cut - Finishes just below bust. Round neck with stand-fall collar, pointed in front. Fronts cut on bias with 3 bust darts either side. Slightly low shoulder. Back has 'diamond' shaped central panel gathered into waistband. Very long, loose cut sleeves with puffed oversleeves at head and deep, turn-back cuffs. Matching belt attached to waistband at back only. Trimmings - Edges piped black satin. Strapping on bodice fronts and oversleeves. Bow at centre-back waist. Fastenings Probably pinned. Cross Reference - Nancy Bradfield 'Costume in Detail' p110, B131.
