Summary
Dress; Spencer - Woman's spencer (dress) dating from 1835-1840. Fabric - Black silk grosgrain. Bodice lined with fawn cotton twill. Sleeves lined loosely with woven brown cotton. Cut - High waisted. Cross-over front with folded bands of grosgrain and black satin giving low 'v' neckline. 2 pairs bust darts. Dropped shoulders. Straight yoke across back. Seams slanting from armhole towards centre-back waist. The centre panel gathered to yoke and at centre-back waist. Long full-cut sleeves tightened at shoulder and cuff with deep bands of gauging. Narrow fastening cuff. Waistband with 2 belt slots at back. Piped seams. Gauging held in place at back with cord. Fastenings - Black silk ribbon ties on ends of waist band. 2 sets of 2 pairs of black painted hooks and eyes (2 hooks missing). Alterations - Let out at back. Evidence of stitching on lower edge of waistband. Possibly shortened at waist for fancy dress. Cross Reference - B131.
