Summary
Fancy dress bodice - Woman's fancy dress bodice dating from c1870's. Fabric - Cream silk with brocaded sprigs of pink, green and black over damask stripe. Lining - Bodice and sleeves lined with white cotton twill. Peplum lined with white glazed cotton. Cut - Fitted bodice with low square neckline and centre-front opening. 2 pairs of bust darts. Dropped shoulders. Centre-back waist. 3/4 length sleeves with panel of ruched fabric and green satin. Lower part heavily trimmed, frill of scalloped fabric at opening. Short peplum is 3 curved sections, the front 2 lying smoothly and with double frill, the back fuller, pleated and with 3 frills. Machine stitched - some in chain, some in lock stitch. Trimmings - Emerald green satin edging neckline. Trimming and bow on sleeves. Wide ruched and frilled band of black silk net on lower edge. Fastenings - 7 brass hooks centre-front 18th century with worked eyelets and bar. Alterations - Made from 18th century dress. Comment - Possibly belonged to Caroline of Anspach (1684-1737).
