Summary
Woman's fancy dress bodice dating from 1870-1900, the fabric being 18th century. Fabric - Late 18th century cream stain quilted through padding onto loose cotton in small diamond pattern. Embroidered in reds, pinks and greens with flower and stem motifs. Lining - Unbleached cotton. Sleeves and tapes mounted onto cotton net. Cut - Tight fitting, waist length with 4 shaped tabs below waist. Square, open neck and loose stomacher front, reminiscent of 18th century. Centre-back fastening. Long sleeves 'en gigot.' Boned centre-front, side seams and back edges (3 missing). Fastenings - 18th century brass hooks and eyes. 11 centre-back. 2 hooks inside waist to attach to skirt etc. Comments - Possibly from a plain quilted 18th century petticoat, made for fancy dress or theatrical use - a quasi-Elizabethan style .
