Summary
Coat; Pelisse - Woman's pelisse (coat) dating from 1825-30. Fabric - Purple-navy napped wool. Lining - Skirt lined with cream silk, bodice and sleeves with grey cotton. Cut - Very slender fitting. High waisted. Fitted bodice. The front pieces bias cut. Bust darts. Wide, flat collar with front points. Shoulder seams very far back, giving 'diamond' shape back panel (gathered at centre-back waist). Long sleeves, full at head and tightly gathered, narrowing to wrist. Fastening cuff of 4 long petal shapes up the arm. The skirt has 2 straight seams and falls smoothly at front with tight gathers centre-back, giving the effect of a bustle. Matching belt. Trimmings - Edges piped in paler blue silk. 20 silk-covered buttons centre-front. Fastenings - Centre-front opening now partly stitched togther. 8 hooks from neck to part-way down skirt, 2 steel and 2 brass. 1 brass eye at waist, the rest hand-worked bar on each cuff. White cotton tape tie from inside back waist. Alterations - Front opening sewn up. Hem turned up. Cross reference - Nancy Bradfield 'Costume in Detail' p133, H. (female)
