Summary
Cape; Mantle - A woman's mantle (cape) dating from c1845. Fabric - Grey shot silk taffeta (black warp/ cream weft). Lining - Unlined. Cut Loose fitting, with centre-front edge to edge opening. Front sections hang over knee level, the back being shorter. Side seam shaped over one shoulder, down the arms with upward curve at elbow. Back cut in 2 bias pieces, joined across at waist level. Large armhole hidden by cape which extends 1/2 way down back, joined at the side seam and covering the arm to just below the elbow. Trimmings - Self-trimmed. Ruched band with with pinked and scalloped edges round front opening. Double frill round hem, single frill over arm. Fastenings - 2 pairs round wire hooks and eyes centre-front at waist level.
