Summary
Dress - A woman's silk dress dating from c1815. Fabric - Fine royal blue silk twill, with woven border of buta and a band of stylised flowers in red, blue, green, yellow, and pale pink. Originally a shawl, the border is at the hem of the dress, the narrow side borders applied as decoration on bodice and sleeve. Lining - Unlined. Cut - Waistline under bust. Cross-over bodice back and front, with low neckline. Fullness gathered into waist and pleated at shoulder under 2 bands, one stitched down hiding seam, one loose. Centre-ack opening extends a short way into the skirt. Very short sleeves cu in 5 'petal' shapes. Blue'grey silk cord joins the petals with covered button on each group of 4 cords. Skirt has gored panels to wither side. Hem edge turned over heavy cord. Trimmings Narrow shawl border applied round neck and sleeve edges and as bands on shoulder. Fastenings - 2 pairs brown cotton tapes at back, 1 pair tying inside the other pair are drawstrings which tie on the outside left side back. (Cross Ref. Nancy Bradfield 'Costume in Detail' p103; H).
