Summary
Overdress - Part of a woman's satin wedding dress and silk overdress dating from 1825-1830. Fabric - Dress cream silk satin, overdress in silk. Lining - Satin lined throughout with fine white glazed cotton sleeves supported on an inner sleeve of stiffened muslin. Cut - Waist just above natural. Scooped neckline with drawstring. The bodice front is cut in one piece shaped with 2 bust darts. Centre-back opening extends into the skirt. The bodice back pieces are shaped with a diagonal seam from armhole to waist, the centre panels are gathered with drawstring at neck, the fullness pleated into the waist. Short, very puffed sleeves, set-in waistband. The skirt has slightly flared side seams. Falls smoothly at the front, tightly gathered at the back. The net overdress is completely seperate from the satin dress and is of the same construction, but longer. Trimmings - The satin is untrimmed. Neck and sleeve of overdress edged with blonde. Narrow piped satine round neck and over underarm back seam. Thick padded roll of satin at armhole. The hem has a deep decorated border of leaves, stems and teardrop shaped made of silk covered card shapes with net filling, the net run with silk floss. the stems are of various weights of twisted silk cord. Fastenings - Silk ribbon drawstring at neck on satin and overdress and at net waist. The satin waist is fastened with 2 silver hooks and eyes. Alterations - The skirt of the satin dress has been taken up at the waist. (Cross Ref.
