Summary

One of two pieces of dress fabric - Part of a woman's and child's dress with overskirt, fragments, and dress dating from the 1860's. Fabric - All pieces in same fine white cotton, printed with all over design of flowers. Multicoloured. Roller and block printed, fabric width 33 inches / 83.8 cms. Lining (F.Dress) - Unlined. Waistband reinforced with wide cotton tape. Female Dress Cut - Originally separate bodiced and skirt now tacked together. Natural round waistline. Bodice centre-front opening. Close neckline with narrow band. Slightly dropped shoulder. Bodice fronts cut full and gathered into waistband centre-front. Back has centre seam and slight gathering centre waist (patch pocket centre-front). Bell sleeves with self-frill at opening. Spotted muslin engageantes with frilled edged narrow Valenciennes lace. Full skirt with straight seams. Gathered to waistband all round, closer at the back. Centre-back opening. Self-frill at hem. Piped seams. Lockstitch machining on waistband. Sleeves pieced. Trimmings (F.Dress) - Neck edged pleated net. Fastenings (F.Dress) - 5 small brass wire hooks and bars. 1 small copper wire hook centre-front. 2 larger flattened brass hooks and eyes at bodice waist. 7 small copper hooks and eyes on waistband from centre-front bodice opening to centre-back skirt opening. 2 strong brass hooks and eye on skirt waistband centre-back. Overskirt Cut - Knee length, short opening right-hand side. Festooned side back with self-fabric bows. Edged with self-frill. Waistband removed. Child's Dress Lining - Unlined. Waistband reinforced. Cut (C.Dress) - Square neckline with straight shoulder pieces. Bodice gathered at neck and waist. Centre-back opening. Wide puff sleeves. with large opening, just above elbow length. Set-in waistband. Full skirt, whipped gathers all round. Muslin faced hem, edged with white ric-rac braid. Piped seams. All handstitched except 1 row machine chain stitch at waist (post 1858). Fastenings (C.Dress) - Brass hooks and buttonhole loops centre-back. Linen tape ties inside waist. Comments Both woman's and child's dress have been machine top-stitched along the top edge of the waistband. No other evidence of having been altered at the waist apart from the joining of the woman's bodice and skirt, done much later. Fragments - Piece of fabric. pair of child's inner sleeves. white cotton with matching fabric frill (1 missing) edged narrow Valenciennes lace. Matching cuff, piped seams, flattened brass hook. 2 strips of fabric, one piped, one used in a garment. (female and child)
