Summary

One of two pieces of dress fabric - Part of a 1860's dress, peplum and fabric pieces. Dress Fabric - White muslin, roller printed with overall repeat of bluey green violets. 4 3/4 inch / 12 cm repeat. Dress Lining - Waistband and pocket stiffened white cotton. Dress Cut - Natural waistline. Close, round neck, with narrow band. Centre-front opening with folded-back buttonhole band. front and back bodiced are cut straight, the fullness gauged in the centre just above the waistband. Long curved set-in sleeves. Set-in waistband. Full skirt has flared side seams. The front opening is stepped at the waist, the skirt having a slit opening to left of centre. The skirt falls smoothly in front and is tightly pleated at sides and back. Fob pocket centre-front. Stiffened hem with white cotton braid edging. 3 self frills from just below knee level. Piped seams on bodice (except right-hand sleeve heading). Dress Fastenings - 6 small pearl buttons and handworked buttonholes centre-front. 5 brass hooks and eyes at waist. Peplum Fabric - As dress. Peplum Cut - Smooth at front, pleated sides and back. Edged with frills at front which lie just above frills of the skirt. Lifts towards the back where there is a shorter section with a single frill. Peplum Fastenings - Brass hook and eye at waist. Fabric Pieces - 2 strips of fabric that resemble the flounces on the dress and peplum, but are narrower. They are seamed to resemble sleeve flounces. Comments - Bodice very plain compared with skirt, possibly there was a matching shawl. 1840's dress turned back-to-front and overskirt added to make a 1869-1870's dress, unfinished. (female)
