Summary

Coat - Made from olive wool coloured silk sateen with a lining of khaki cotton. Full length cut with slightly falared side seams; wrapover front; sleeves set in, square, wide, straight. 2 pocket slits; side seams slit at hem for 3 in/7.7 cm. Decorated with corded quilting overall. Design of rows of zigzags enclosed a quatrefoil shape; borders of diagonal and cross lines. Very similar coats are in the Embroiderers' Guild collection. Very similar garment in Indianapolis Muserum of Art, No. 33.796 - the border has similar elements in the design. 'An important person must have owned this extraordinarily fine quilted coat. The labour expended on its execution underscores the status of textiles in this culture.' (Catalogue of Indianapolis Museum of Art). Syrian. (female/male)
