Summary
Model theatre - Glass fronted wooden cabinet painted red containing a colourful scene. The model scene contains a boat swung on davits over descending steps with the front of a building and a figure on the ground floor with scales and a spear. On the first floor there is a figure with a mace. There are other piers depicting a large snake, which seems to be a common theme, as well as an open hand holding a red heart. The letters 'B' and 'J' are found at the top of two pillars, possibly representing Boaz ('In it is Strength') and Jachin ('He Shall Establish'). They are they two pillars of the Temple of Solomon and can also be found in the High Priestess tarot card. The scene is possibly a representation of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. In notebook no.5, page 55 (1340945.5) Charles Wade refers to: 'Seventh Heaven no.190 Red case containing strange cottage made Model with Masonic ? emblems. Heart & Hand, sphere, square & compass. Coffin with dove etc. Spiral glass columns' Includes sketch.
Provenance
