Summary
Large red lacquer bowl, woven material, stiffened, inside painted black and gold showing five carp, two gold, four with a black, glass eye, swimming in water, raised decoration in representations of water plants. Gold rim and raised base with gold characters underneath. Small label 'No. 352'. .In notebook no.3, page 55 (1340945.3) Charles Wade refers to: 'Green Room 14. Lacquer Bowl. 1’10¾” dia: black & gold. Red lacquer outside, interior a pool of water, with five swimming fish. so beautifully drawn they actually appear to move through the swirl of the water & water used. the black lacquer background varies in tone with hints of smoky gold. The fish is TAKA-MAKIYÉ (raised gold) an exquisite piece!'.
